What is TMV2?
Many of you will have seen the TMV2 logo accompanying a variety of valves and products, but what is TMV2? And how does it affect you?
Who are NSF?
NSF (formerly known as BuildCert) is an industry-leading building approval and private certification service that introduced both the TMV2 & TMV3 schemes. However, for the purpose of this blog, we are focusing on the TMV2 Scheme and its implications for you.
TMV2 is a testing scheme for thermostatic mixing valves, including shower valves, that ensures international standards are met. Namely BS EN 1111 and 1287. Said standards impose specific requirements that a thermostatic valve must adhere to, hence instilling confidence in the safety and performance of the product being installed in the premises.
The scheme was introduced in line with the existing TMV3 scheme. However, is designed specifically to regulate standards for thermostatic mixing valves in domestic environments in order to reduce the risk of scalding in the home. In 2010, the TMV2 scheme became part of the British building regulations to control the temperature of hot water to a safe maximum in domestic bathrooms, specifically for baths and bidets. The regulations apply to all new build domestic properties in the UK, along with homes where bathroom renovations are being undertaken involving any movement or replacement of bath, bidet or shower outlets.
TMV2 Importance
Scalds and burns are amongst the most common childhood injuries. It’s shocking to hear, as it is so easily preventable. However, it does reinforce the vital importance of thermostatic mixing valves, specifically thermostatic mixing valves certified to TMV2 standards.
Thermostatic mixing valves protect against scalding by automatically controlling water temperature and cutting the flow if the temperature rises to dangerous levels.
TMV2 approved thermostatic mixing valves provide peace of mind for all involved. Including the homeowner, installer and merchant, all of whom know the manufacturer is taking the necessary steps to provide a safe and effective product.
TMV2 Approvals
All valves complying with the TMV scheme are legibly marked with the manufacturer's name or identification mark, or a unique model reference, making it easy to be sure the valve is compliant.
TMV approval also requires that approved valves must include an installation and maintenance document to provide details of the operating conditions of the valve, its temperature differential, installation requirements, method of adjusting the mixed outlet temperature, commissioning procedure and test procedure.
