Domestic Pressure Reducing Valves

Pressure reducing valves (also known as pressure regulating valves) are installed in residential water systems to reduce and stabilise inlet pressures from mains water supplies or boosted water systems. These inlet pressures are generally too high and varied for domestic appliances to function correctly, potentially causing costly damage to the appliances and surroundings.

About our Domestic Pressure Reducing Valves

Meeting the latest European standard and UK water supply requirements, our range of PRVs provide control under both dynamic and static flow conditions, depending on model.

Pressure Reducing Valves FAQs

What is a PRV?

Pressure reducing valves regulate the incoming water pressure from a mains supply or a boosted supply within a building. This limits high-pressure water that can seriously damage components in heating and potable systems which can lead to damage or even burst pipes and seals. Pressure reducing valves (PRVs) are designed to reduce water pressure and maintain it to a set level preventing damage to those components installed downstream of the PRV.

How does a PRV work?

Pressure reducing valves commonly used in pneumatic systems are generally spring-loaded. Sometimes referred to as a pressure regulator, the valve uses spring pressure against a diaphragm to open the valve. The outlet pressure of the valve forces the diaphragm upward which consequently shuts the valve. In order for the valve to open again, the outlet pressure must drop below the point set on the valve. This allows the pressure of the spring to overcome the outlet pressure which, in turn, forces the stem downward. Each install can be set to specific site conditions by turning the adjusting screw.

Why use a water regulating valve?

Aside from ensuring a safe and controlled flow of water from your outlets, pressure regulating valves present many other benefits.

Save water

Utilising a PRV set to the correct pressure levels is an easy way to reduce water consumption in your home. Reducing system pressure down to 10-20 PSI could save the average home thousands of gallons of water per year.

Save money

If your property is on a water meter, a reduction in water usage will mean a reduction in your bills. However, there are other ways PRVs will save you money over time. Regulated water pressure relieves strain on all components downstream, preventing damage and increased wear. This should, in turn, increase the lifespan of fixtures and appliances.

Comfortable water pressure

Turning on the kitchen tap and subsequently getting soaked, or stepping into a shower that feels more like a firehose - neither one is a pleasant experience. Using a PRV will ensure a consistent, reliable flow of water through your outlets.

Reduce the risk of leaks

Excess pressure running through pipes can cause hairline cracks to appear, which can eventually result in a pipe blowout. Leaks in your home can cause devastating damage to your home, often requiring costly reconstruction work. By fitting a PRV, this risk is greatly reduced and could save you a lot of money.
